Zambia women’s national team captain Barbra Banda has revealed they will head into their CAF Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarterfinals clash against Nigeria without fear after they were pooled together following the conclusion of group matches in Morocco.

While Nigeria topped their Group B with seven points amassed from two wins, and one draw, Zambia finished second in Group A with seven points, the same number as leaders Morocco but the hosts took the top spot because of a better goal difference.

Ahead of their clash against Nigeria, Banda remained cool and focused, only saying they are capable of facing any team in the tournament and it will not be a new feeling coming up against them.

“We now know we are facing Nigeria, and for us, it’s just about being ready mentally, physically and tactically. We respect them, but we don’t fear anyone. We know what we are capable of as a team,” said Banda as quoted by FAZ Media.

“It’s not a new feeling. We have faced them before and came out with a positive result. That gives us belief, but we also know this is a new game and a new challenge. We need to show up with the same discipline, energy and focus we had against DR Congo and even more.”

On Ghana’s 1-0 win against DR Congo to seal the last eight spot, Banda said: “I think we played so well as a team and we are heading in the right direction. It’s a good record coming out of the first round without a loss, and now we are looking forward to the quarterfinals, we are up and ready for it.

“The team spirit is high. Everyone is focused and personally, I believe in this group because we have been growing with each game. We just have to keep pushing and trust our game plan.”

Banda further praised the contribution of young players like Mercy Chipasula and Fridah Mukoma, who have been integrated into the senior team with confidence and growing impact.

“It’s good looking at how the young stars are coming up and how they are coordinating with the team. We have to keep encouraging them because they are our future Zambian stars. I am happy with their performance because they are adding something to the team.”

The clash against Nigeria will be staged at Stade Municipal de Berkane on Saturday.
