WAFU U-20: Composed Nigeria progress on penalties after being held by Niger

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles are through to the final of the 2025 WAFU-Zone B U-20 Boys Cup after a 4-3 penalty kick shootout victory over Niger on Sunday at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, Ghana.

Nigeria captain Daniel Bameyi confidently sent the Flying Eagles to the final by converting Nigeria’s fifth spot kick to prevent a comeback from the Nigerien selection. After failing to convert their first two attempts, Niger made a strong attempt to get back into the shootout but experienced defender Bameyi put to rest any doubts for Nigerian supporters.

It was a strong performance from Niger, who provided a difficult riddle for the Flying Eagles to solve with their physical strength and organization. Considered the favorites after breezing through Group A without too much trouble, Nigeria struggled to find a breakthrough but remained calm to get the job done in penalties after a scoreless ninety minutes.

Nigeria now await the winner of Sunday’s later semifinal between Ivory Coast and hosts Ghana.
