Simba Bhora FC captain Walter Musona capped off a successful season by bagging the 2024 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) Star of the Year Award in Zimbabwe on Friday night.
The Simba Bhora player shrugged off competition from other nominees including Star Khama Billiat to win the award. Musona has since joined an elite league of Zimbabwean players to win the award twice in their careers.The Warriors attacker is also among a few Zimbabwean footballers to claim such an award with two different teams that won the PSL championship.
Coaches and selected sports journalists voted for the standout performers of the just-ended season which saw Simba Bhora winning the PSL title. Musona also achieved a similar feat while on the books of FC Platinum in 2022.
Musona outshined Billiat of Yadah FC who emerged as the second runners up with Highlanders’ Lynoth Chikuhwa finishing as the first runner up. The soon to be 29-year-old former Polokwane City player has joined Rodwell Chinyengetere, Peter Ndlovu, Stanley Ndunduma who claimed such an accolade twice in their playing careers.
“It feels great to walk the podium in a league with so many good players like Khama Billiat, Machope and Lynoth Chikuhwa, ” Musona told the New Zimbabwean website.
In other categories, Simba Bhora's Tonderai Ndiraya won the Coach of the Year gong while Chikuhwa won the Golden Boot Award with 17 goals. There was a consolation for ex-Kaizer Chiefs winger Billiat who earned the Fans Choice Award and Chicken Inn’s goalkeeper Bernard Donavan received the Golden Glove for achieving 20 clean sheets.
