Outgoing Mbale Heroes chairman Andrew Wambi has blamed the club’s dismal performance in the Uganda Premier League on the reappointment of Asaph Mwebaze as head coach.

Wambi, speaking to NBS Sport, expressed regret over the decision to bring back the veteran tactician, insisting it triggered the downfall of the historic Eastern Giants in their long-awaited topflight return.

“The problems of Mbale Heroes started the day Asaph (Mwebaze) was appointed. Most of the fans didn’t like him,” said Wambi. “Before he came, we were performing well, and everything changed after that.”

Mwebaze had initially led the club to promotion in 2024 after a 17-year absence from the top tier but left under unclear circumstances. However, he was reappointed early in the 2024/25 season following the dismissal of Richard Malinga. His second stint was short-lived, ending before the start of the second round amid mounting pressure and poor form.

Mbale Heroes failed to register a single league victory under Baker Mbowa, Mwebaze’s successor, and were eventually relegated, finishing bottom of the 16-team log with just 10 points.

Wambi didn’t spare the fans either, criticizing their disruptive role and suggesting that some had overstepped their boundaries.

“Everyone thinks they can do the coach’s work or the chairman’s work. When you tell them to do the work, you realize they’re just noisemakers,” he added.

Wambi’s exit marks the end of a turbulent season for Mbale Heroes—one that started with promise but ended in disappointment and finger-pointing.
