DR Congo head coach Sébastien Desabre has, for the first time, summoned Aaron Wan-Bissaka to the national side for the June friendly games against Mali and Madagascar. Wan-Bissaka has shown interest in representing the Leopards since 2024.
Born in Croydon, Greater London, to DR Congolese parents, Wan-Bissaka, 27, represented England at youth level but stiff competition in the right-back position forced him to pursue his international career with his parents’ home country.
Desabre now has another Premier League star at his disposal after Wan-Bissaka completed his change of allegiance. Wan-Bissaka left Manchester United to join West Ham United at the start of the season, scoring two goals and providing three assists. His goal against Newcastle United is nominated for West Ham’s goal of the season award.
The French coach called up a predominantly European-based contingent for the friendly games. Brentford star Yoane Wissa spearheads the attack alongside CAF Champions League finalist Fiston Mayele. Real Betis striker Cédric Bakambu and Trabzonspor forward Simon Banza have also retained their places in the national side.
Alongside Wan-Bissaka, Ipswich Town defender Axel Tuanzebe is named in the squad. Tuanzebe similarly represented England at youth level before switching his allegiance to DR Congo in 2024.
