Former Kenya national team captain Victor Wanyama has named three nations he believes will fight for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy in Morocco.
This will be the 35th edition of the biennial Africa Cup of Nations tournament organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and it will be the second edition hosted by Morocco, after 1988.
Morocco was originally scheduled to host the 2015 edition, but withdrew due to fears stemming from the Western African Ebola virus epidemic. Speaking ahead of the showdown, the former Harambee Stars and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder singled out Senegal, Nigeria, and the host nation, Morocco, as the teams to watch.
“The going is good. I’m feeling good and looking forward to the AFCON in Morocco. I’ll be there. I’m thinking…I have a few friends playing over there, Senegal, Nigeria, and Morocco, so I’ll be backing all those teams,” Wanyama CAFOnline.com as quoted by Pulse Sports.
“There are a few of them there, Iwobi, Sadio, Mahrez, and Hakimi, so a lot of players to watch. The game has evolved, and we have a lot of unknown national teams that are doing well,” he shared.
“The likes of Comoros and Madagascar, a lot of teams have evolved, and there are no longer small fish in African football. I think Senegal, Nigeria, and Morocco bring the most vibes.”
According to the draw conducted ahead of the AFCON, hosts Morocco will headline Group A and will take on Mali, Zambia and Comoros in what looks a hotly contested pool. Record seven-time winners Egypt will face a trio of Southern African teams in Group B in the form of last year’s bronze medalists South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe.
In Group C, Nigeria will lock horns with Tunisia and the East African duo of Uganda and Tanzania, 2021 champions Senegal go up against Democratic Republic of Congo, Benin and Botswana in Group D. Algeria, winners in 2019, will take on Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea and Sudan in Group E.
Meanwhile, defending champions Ivory Coast will come up against old rivals and five-time winners Cameroon, Gabon and Mozambique in Group F as they look to claim back-to-back titles.
