Orlando Pirates stand between Kaizer Chiefs and their first major trophy in 10 years, a prospect that fills debutant Gaston Sirino with optimism for a winner's medal with the Glamour Boys.
Gaston Sirino's confident declaration, "We will rise to the occasion," sets the stage for a high-stakes Nedbank Cup final as his Kaizer Chiefs prepare to clash with defending champions, Orlando Pirates.
This Soweto Derby isn't just another fixture; it's an important clash with Chiefs desperate to end a nine-year-long drought without major silverware, and Pirates standing as the formidable obstacle in their path.
For veteran midfielder Sirino, this match presents a golden opportunity to cap off his debut season at Amakhosi with a winner's medal, adding extra significance to an already emotionally charged contest.
“I am feeling good. It’s a good opportunity to win a trophy, which is what I am here for,” said Sirino. “Everybody, including me, needs to take responsibility. We must play better than them [Pirates], control the game. We played well against them last weekend but didn’t get the desired result.”
According to the experienced Uruguayan, minimising past fatal errors is the key to success in the cup final.
“We have played well in many games, but we have also made mistakes that have cost us. We can’t afford that on Saturday,” he added, insisting, “Our concentration has to be fully focused for the whole game. We have a great opportunity to make history and have a positive end to the season.”
Meanwhile, Sirino also stated that he understands the frustration of the trophy-starved Amakhosi fanbase, acknowledging the immense pressure of representing the country's biggest club.
“When you play for Kaizer Chiefs, it's different from other clubs,” the gifted playmaker admits “The pressure is greater because the support is bigger and so are the expectations. I think we played quite well against Pirates [last Saturday], but our fans were rightly not happy with the outcome. We really want to win for our supporters. I am happy the stadium will be full. I like the pressure. We are preparing well to rise to the occasion.”
The Nedbank Cup final between Chiefs and Pirates will be played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday.
