Former Ivory Coast national team winger Maxwel Cornet has completed a loan transfer to Serie A side Genoa from English Premier League club West Ham United, the Italian club confirmed on Monday.

Cornet's latest move comes after a loan to fellow Premier League club Southampton was terminated shortly before he left for Italy. The 28-year-old versatile left flank player made only four appearances for Southampton in the Premier League and League Cup during the first half of the 2024-25 season.

After a promising start to life in England following his move to Burnley ahead of the 2021-22 Premier League season, the last couple of years have not been kind to the former Olympique Lyonnais star. Cornet earned a big money move to West Ham after scoring nine goals despite Burnley being relegated following the 2021-22 season but injuries and loss of form have curtailed his career.

Cornet will now look to get his career back on track with Genoa. He made 21 league appearances over two seasons for West Ham, suffering a long-term leg injury during his first season in London before seeing his role decline and subsequent loan to Southampton.

The Metz youth product's struggles in club football impacted his fortunes with the Ivory Coast national team. Cornet has not made an appearance for The Elephants since September 2023, with whom he has 31 appearances and 6 goals.
