Wilfred Ndidi questions officiating in Beşiktaş’ Istanbul derby defeat

Beşiktaş vice-captain Wilfred Ndidi has questioned the quality of officiating following his side’s narrow defeat to Istanbul rivals Fenerbahçe.

Beşiktaş lost the Istanbul derby 1-0 to the hosts at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium on Sunday in a tense Süper Lig Matchday 28 encounter.

The game turned on a controversial late penalty awarded to Fenerbahçe after Ivorian international Emmanuel Agbadou was deemed to have fouled Dorgeles Nené inside the box. Video replays, however, suggested that Agbadou had won the ball cleanly before the contact.

After the final whistle, the Nigerian international took to his Instagram story to vent his frustration regarding the decision and the lack of VAR intervention.

“How can you have VAR and decide not to check? I’m still trying to understand.”

This defeat sees Beşiktaş’s hopes of climbing into the top three hit a bump as the Black Eagles are in fourth place with 52 points. Meanwhile, the victory puts Fenerbahçe, to 63 points, keeping them firmly in the hunt for the title and maintaining pressure on league leaders Galatasaray.
