Cape Verde national team forward Willy Semedo is in hot form for Cypriot club Omonia FC, making it three goals from four league matches with a goal in his club’s 5-0 thrashing of AEL Limassol on Monday.
The 31-year-old veteran showed his quality in the 50th minute to double Omonoia’s lead after former Mali national team defender Senou Coulibaly opened the scoring. Receiving a pass from Fotis Kitsos on the left wing, Semedo cut past a defender before finishing low past AEL Limassol and Mexico goalkeeping legend Guillermo Ochoa.
It was a long day for Ochoa, who let in three more goals to complete a thumping from the home side. Omonia are now tied with APOEL and Aris Limassol at the top of the table with each having nine points from four matches.
Semedo is on course for his best-ever season at the pace he is currently scoring at. The French-born former Grenoble Fooot player now has 7 goals from 10 matches across all competitions, including 4 goals and an assist in 6 matches which played a crucial role in qualifying Omonia for the league phase of the UEFA Conference League. He enjoyed success in the Conference League last season with 6 goals and an assist in 11 games.
The Cape Verde national team forward is also highly involved with the Blue Sharks as they close in on a historic first-ever qualification for the FIFA World Cup. He appeared in both of Cape Verde’s September matches as they increased their lead at the top of Group D to four points following a crucial home victory over Cameroon.
Another match in the Cypriot top flight is comes next Sunday at Anorthosis before Omonia begin their campaign in the Conference League proper with an enticing home clash against Bundesliga side Mainz on October 2.
