AC Omonia: Willy Semedo hat-trick sparks friendly duel with teammate Ryan Mmaee

Cyprus League leaders AC Omonia stretched their league winning streak to seven matches against Pafos FC with a 4-2 road victory on Sunday courtesy of Cape Verde national team forward Willy Semedo’s hat-trick as well as a goal from former Morocco forward Ryan Mmaee.

The league leaders humbled the UEFA Champions League main stage participants at their own home, overcoming an early concession to emerge victorious in a thrilling clash.

Kostas Pileas put the hosts ahead inside ten minutes with an excellent volley but the response was swift from the visitors. The league’s leading scorer heading into the match, Ryan Mmaee made it a stunning ten goals in his last seven matches when he silenced the home supporters a few minutes later.

But while the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations participant with Morocco continued his excellent recent form, it became the Willy Semedo show after the Cape Verdean forward took over. Tied 1-1 at the half, the veteran poacher gave Omonia their first lead less than five minutes into the second half with a splendid left-footed strike into the top corner.

Brazilian forward Lele leveled the match in the 79th minute and it looked like the two powerhouses would share the points.

In the end though, a two-goal burst from Semedo secured yet another victory for the leaders. The crucial moment came two minutes after the equalizer when the former Pafos player smoothly received a pass and quickly fired low past goalkeeper Athanasios Papadoudis for the decisive goal.

He finished off the result from the penalty spot after drawing a foul in the box to secure all three points for his club.

The domination of AC Omonia’s forwards

And now the two African internationals have a friendly competition going for the league’s top scorer honor. Both are level on fourteen goals, each five ahead of the closest competitor.

Omonia and their star forwards look unstoppable at the moment and next up on their list of victims is hapless Paralimni, who are firmly at the bottom of the table with a shocking 1 point collected from 21 matches.
