Wissa continues return to form with goal in first Premier League start for Newcastle

Yoane Wissa continued his recovery from a long-term injury on Tuesday with a goal for Newcastle United in their 3-1 Premier League victory at Burnley.

The DR Congo international forward, who was unable to join up with the Leopards at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations due to a knee injury, bundled in the second goal for the Magpies as they surged to a 2-0 lead inside ten minutes. Joelinton opened the scoring before two minutes had elapsed at the Turf Moor.

A chaotic sequence inside the Burnley six-yard box allowed him to apply the finishing touch after the Burnley defense failed to clear. It is the former Brentford star’s second goal since joining his current club after prevously opening his account in a 2-1 EFL Cup (League Cup) quarterfinal victory over Fulham a couple weeks ago.

Josh Laurent pulled a goal back for the hosts in the 23rd minute but Bruno Guimarães restored Newcastle’s two-goal lead in second half stoppage time to give the Toon Army their first Premier League victory in five matches.

The Congolese forward’s presence will be needed for his club in the coming weeks after missing almost four months with a knee injury since his big money signing from Brentford.

Newcastle currently sits in 10th place on the Premier League table following Tuesday’s result and have a busy January coming up with Premier League, an EFL Cup semifinal against Manchester City as well as FA Cup and UEFA Champions League duties ahead in January.
