Ghana’s Women FA Cup Committee chairperson Rosalind Amoh has questioned the financial sustainability of appointing an expatriate coach for the senior female national team.
The Ghana Football Association earlier this week named Swedish trainer Kim Lars Bjorkegren as the new head coach of the Black Queens. His appointment comes following the departure of Swiss tactician Nora Hauptle to the Copper Queens of Zambia for a two-year deal.
Amoh, who is also a renowned sports journalist, spoke to Ghana based Radio Gold Sports.
“I think that we have had some good local coaches in the past just that they have lacked the support that they require to succeed. Now going forward, can we sustain it, how much are we paying the foreign based coach, wouldn’t we have done better if we had committed some of those resources to the local coaches?"
“Because these local coaches are not paid, they are always on allowances. The only time they make some money is when the team excels and they are being paid bonuses. That is the only time the local coaches make some money. But for the foreign based coaches that are coming in, we pay them monthly wages and so that is the issue and at the moment that is what we have done and we can only support and pray that the new coach succeeds.”
Coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren will now be tasked with leading the Queens at the 2025 Women's Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted in Morocco come July.
