Women's Football: Ikenne to host 2025 NWFL Super Six

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has officially announced Ikenne in Ogun State as the host city for the highly anticipated 2024/2025 NWFL Premiership Super Six Tournament. This marks a significant return of the six-team championship playoff to Nigeria's South West region for the first time since the 2021 edition held in Ijebu Ode.

The title playoff is scheduled to take place from Thursday, May 8 to Sunday, May 17 at the Remo Stars Stadium, the home ground of Remo Stars Ladies. Speaking about the selection, NWFL Chairperson Ms. Nkechi Obi stated that it is an opportunity to revive women's football in the historic state.

"On behalf of the board and management of the NWFL, I congratulate Ikenne and Ogun State on being selected to host this year’s NWFL Premiership Super Six.
This is a significant opportunity to further stimulate the revival of women’s football in the state—fondly remembered as host of the inaugural Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finals in 1998—and to elevate the profile of the women’s game nationwide."

She also added that the venue was selected in line with the rising agenda of women's football in the country.

"Last year, we hosted the competition in Yenagoa, South-South, and now we’re excited to bring it to Ikenne in the South West, in line with our Women Football Rising agenda to spread elite women’s football across every region of Nigeria.”

This marks the first time Ikenne will host the NWFL Premiership playoffs and comes just two years after Remo Stars Ladies secured their historic promotion to the top flight at the same venue during the 2023 NWFL Championship.

According to a circular sent to the participating clubs, the 2025 Super Six will be played in a round-robin format, with all six teams playing five matches each. Teams are expected to arrive on Thursday, May 8, with the tournament draw and pre-match meeting scheduled for Friday, May 9.

As the tournament approaches, five teams have already secured their spots: Rivers Angels, Nasarawa Amazons, Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, and the host team, Remo Stars Ladies. The sixth and final slot will be determined after the decisive Matchweek 14 clash between Robo Queens and Naija Ratels on Wednesday, April 30.

The last four editions of the NWFL have shown its competitive balance in the league, producing different champions each year: Rivers Angels (2021), Bayelsa Queens (2022), Delta Queens (2023), and Edo Queens (2024). This sets the stage for another captivating battle for the coveted 2025 title.

The winner of the 2025 NWFL Premiership Super Six will go on to represent Nigeria at the WAFU-B Qualifiers for a place in the 2025 CAF Women’s Champions League, and ultimately, the inaugural 2026 FIFA Women’s Club Championship.
