Libya’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup evaporated on Wednesday after the Mediterranean Knights suffered a meltdown to draw visitors Cape Verde 3-3 in Tripoli.
A shocking goalkeeping mistake by Libya captain Murad Al Wuheeshi set the stage for a remarkable comeback by Group D leaders Cape Verde, who looked dead and buried. Substitute forward Willy Semedo equalized minutes later when the Libyan defense failed to deal with a cross, pushing Cape Verde a step closer to a first-ever World Cup qualification.
It was an inspired performance for most of the match from hosts Libya, who took the lead in the opening minute when a cross was directed by Blue Sharks defender Roberto Lopes into his own goal.

Cape Verde responded before the half hour mark with Telmo Arcanjo’s accurate header from a cross by Heriberto Tavares. However, the hosts restored their advantage before halftime through Ezzedine El Maremi, who put in an inspired performance to lead the Libyan attacking line.
It looked like the match was over in favor of the hosts when Mahmoud Al-Shalui unleashed an incredible free kick over thirty yards that left Blue Sharks goalkeeper and captain Vozinha helpless.
However, there was one final twist in the story. In the 76th minute, Sidny Cabral’s errant pass went through to Al Wuheeshi and the goalkeeper remarkably allowed the ball to roll through his legs.
With the visitors back within one, Cape Verde launched attacks against the demoralized hosts and it was Semedo who reacted quickest to finish when a cross was allowed to fall in the six-yard box.
Cape Verde remain a victory away from confirming their qualification but have no margin for error. They need to defeat Eswatini at home on Monday to finish the job or they risk being overtaken by Cameroon. Libya, who could have remained firmly in the chase with a victory, are now all but eliminated.
