World Cup (Q): Equatorial Guinea and Liberia share spoils after turbulent week in Malabo

After a week filled with chaos, Equatorial Guinea and Liberia shared the spoils in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying Group H encounter in Malabo.

Nzalang Nacional came into the tie on the back of a controversy that saw them fail to take part in the match against Malawi on matchday nine. Guillermo Ganet was named head coach this morning after the Equatoguinean Football Federation fired Juan Micha.

The home side fielded new faces following the controversy and started the game on a positive note. Santiago Eneme forced a good save from Liberia goalkeeper Junior Yeanaye, but Nzalang Nacional took the lead a minute later through a goal from Federico Bikoro, who slotted home from close range after the visitors failed to defend a corner kick.

After a very difficult 25 minutes, Nicholas Andrews restored parity for the Lone Stars in the 27th minute with a powerful left-footed strike. The home side could have led at halftime, but José Nabil’s free kick rattled the bar.

The second half saw a much-improved Liberian side as they dominated possession. Chances were limited at both ends, but Gael Akogo saw his shot sail wide for Equatorial Guinea. Ayouba Kosiah could have snatched victory for the visitors, but his header went over the bar ten minutes before time.

Liberia ended the campaign third with 15 points. Equatorial Guinea, who await disciplinary measures from FIFA, are fourth with 11 points as it stands. Both nations are eliminated from contention to qualify for the World Cup.
