The game started off badly for the home side as striker Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana was shown a straight red card in the fifth minute for a rash challenge that caught goalkeeper Brian Bwire.
Burundi were the better side despite the numerical disadvantage for the remainder of the half. The half’s best chance came at the stroke of halftime when Adam Wilson forced a superb save from Burundi keeper Jonathan Nahimana.
The visitors were the better of the two sides in the second half. Timothy Ouma’s deflected strike tested Nahimana at the hour mark. Second-half substitute Ryan Ogam broke the deadlock with a fantastic left-footed finish from outside the box in the 73rd minute.
The hosts could have snatched a late draw with a header from Abedi Bigirimana at the death, but Harambee Stars goalie Bryne Omondi pulled off a good save.
Both nations have failed to qualify, as Kenya now sits third in Group F with 12 points. Three losses in a row have caused Burundi to slip down to fifth place with 10 points.
The Harambee Stars finish up their campaign away at Ivory Coast on Tuesday, where they could play the role of spoiler against the Elephants. Burundi are also away where they will face Gabon on the same day.
