Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put has reiterated his belief that the national team still has a realistic chance of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Belgian tactician, who on Monday named a 26-man squad to face Botswana and Algeria in their final Group G fixtures, emphasized that the qualification journey remains open.
“I believe I have selected the best players for Uganda Cranes, and together with my technical team, we are convinced our chances are still alive,” he said. “The first step is to win our last two matches. In football, anything can happen. We can qualify either as group leaders or as runners-up, but what matters is that we take the opportunity in front of us.”
The squad features three goalkeepers, seven defenders, six midfielders, and six forwards. Among the notable inclusions is Allan Oyirwoth, a young talent based in the United States with New England Revolution. Put expressed satisfaction on his return to the team:
“He was once called up for the Mozambique game, but his club did not release him. I thank FUFA for working hard to secure him this time. He is a player with the qualities I want, and I trust he will live up to expectations.”
Also returning to the squad is midfielder Bobosi Byaruhanga, whose absence in previous call-ups raised questions. Put clarified that the player had been going through a transitional period but is now settled and ready to make an impact.
Uganda Cranes will face Botswana on October 9 before taking on Algeria on October 14. The team currently sits second in Group G with 15 points from eight matches, four behind leaders Algeria on 19 points.
