Former Bafana Bafana captain Neil Tovey has ruled out any possibility of Benin defeating Nigeria when the two sides face off in a do-or-die final qualifier of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Tuesday.
Going into the final matches of Group C, the Super Eagles will need nothing less than a win to secure automatic qualification for the global tournament. Benin are currently topping the pile with17 points while South Africa are second with 15 points. Nigeria are third on 14 points.
“Bafana must win, and qualify for the World Cup,” said Tovey as quoted by FARPost. “We just didn’t get the decisive goal [against Zimbabwe], but it’s still in our hands.”
He added: “Benin have absolutely no chance of beating Nigeria in Nigeria. Nothing! Not a chance in hell.”
Tovey delivered a message to South Africa by saying: “Don’t think about what’s happening elsewhere. Ask the players if they want to play in the World Cup, because this is it. They’re 90 minutes away from making history.”
A win for Benin against Nigeria could further complicate matters for South Africa, who will face Rwanda in their qualifier at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday.
