World Cup (Q): McCarthy explains return of Austin Odhiambo for Kenya qualifiers

Kenya national team head coach Benni McCarthy has explained his decision to recall midfielder Austin Odhiambo for the remaining two World Cup qualifiers against Burundi and Ivory Coast.

The Gor Mahia midfielder, who was among the star players for Harambee Stars during the opening stages of TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament in East Africa, was dropped from the squad for the final group game and quarterfinal clash where Kenya’s journey ended after defeat against Madagascar.

He was further overlooked for Kenya’s qualifiers against Gambia and Seychelles. Kenya lost the first game 3-1 before recovering to beat Seychelles 5-0. Odhiambo, however, earned a recall for the Burundi and Ivory Coast matches.

‘He got the message’

“He got the message. He has worked hard, playing every minute for his team so far, earning himself the captaincy, so I am very pleased for the boy,” said McCarthy as quoted by Pulse Sports.

“If he can continue on that path where his qualities shine through for his club, then he will always be part of the national team. He was a member of the CHAN squad and a very important member, but no one comes above the team.”

The South Africa coach added: “If his standards are not up to the level I want in my team, then it does not matter who he is — everyone has to work hard for the team. He has gone and done that, and now he’s back. I’m happy for him — and so should you be.”

Kenya will first face Burundi on October 9, 2025, at Intwari Stadium with kick off set for 4pm EAT, before wrapping up their campaign against Ivory Coast on October 14, 2025, kicking off at 10pm EAT, at Alassane Ouattara Stadium.

Currently sitting fifth in the Group with nine points, Harambee Stars will be looking to finish their qualification journey on a positive note.
