Morocco continued their flawless run through 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying on Monday with a 2-0 victory over Zambia in Group E action at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, Zambia.
Hamza Igamane’s instinctive strike early in the second half was enough to move visitors Morocco out of reach on a disappointing day for Zambian supporters. Already qualified for the World Cup finals, the Atlas Lions rested a couple of stars like Achraf Hakimi and Zambia failed to take advantage in front of their home supporters.
The hosts struggled out of the gate and did little to challenge the Group E winners. A disastrous attempt to play out the defense left Zambia behind inside ten minutes when Youssef En-Nesyri finished under Zambia goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata after the Moroccan attack pounced on timid passing.
Even with the return of Fashion Sakala to the Zambian attack after the resolution of a lengthy dispute, the hosts did little to trouble Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou in a crucial match for Chipolopolo’s qualification hopes. Once Igamane shocked the home support with his strike from distance soon after halftime, Morocco managed the game well to maintain their perfect record in Group E.
The Atlas Lions now have a spotless record of 21 points from 7 matches while Zambia remain four points behind Tanzania for second place and a potential spot in the African playoff. Next month, another stiff test awaits Zambia where they will have to defeat Tanzania in Dar es Salaam to keep their hopes alive.
