World Cup (Q): Rohr names Nigeria danger men Benin should be wary of

Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr has singled out key players for Nigeria, whom they will have to be wary of when the two sides face off in a decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture at Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Tuesday.

Both teams will head into the final fixture of the campaign with a chance to qualify for the global tournament that will be jointly hosted by 16 cities in three North American countries. While Nigeria defeated Lesotho 2-1, Benin secured a 1-0 away win against Rwanda courtesy of a late Tosin Aiyegun strike.

The two sides will now meet with the winner standing a chance to qualify. Ahead of the game, Rohr, who formerly handled Nigeria, as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, and Alex Iwobi, as among the players his side should be wary of.

Benin are leading Group C with 17 points

“Playing against (Victor) Osimhen, (Ademola) Lookman, (Moses) Simon, (Alex) Iwobi. That’s another story. This result builds confidence,” said Rohr as quoted by Soccernet.

A win for Benin will automatically secure their qualification regardless of results elsewhere, but anything less could open the door for South Africa or Nigeria to overtake them.

He added: “We still have to do something great in Uyo. We have lost two players for the match against Nigeria as a result of a second yellow card. But all is possible for the three teams SouthAfrica, Benin and Nigeria.

“We now have the decision to win in Uyo in our hands. This can be a little advantage. But we will see.”

Benin are leading Group C with 17 points, two more than second-placed South Africa, while Nigeria are third with 14 points. South Africa will wind up their matches with a home game against Rwanda.
