World Cup Qualifying: Tanzania fight back to hold Congo

Tanzania continued their push for second place in Group E from 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying when they fought back from a goal down to draw 1-1 against Congo on Friday.

Tanzania came into the game with an impressive record of three wins in Group E with Congo seated bottom of the rankings with no victories heading into the sixth matchday.

Congo, who were playing in front of their vociferous fans at the Stade Alphonse Massambat-Débat in Brazzaville, came out of their shells with threatening attacks but they struggled to score. Both sides fired blanks heading into the half time break.

The home side returned for the second half with increased firepower when Inno Loemba threatened Tanzania’s goal’s area but his effort was flagged offside much to the relief of the visitors.

Congo’s incessant pressure paid off in the 68th minute when 19-year-old AC Léopards forward Dechan Moussavou fired in his first international goal and the opener.

Tanzania did not rest on their oars and out of nowhere pulled level from 19-year-old substitute Selemani Mwalimu in the dying stages of the game, breaking the hearts of the home fans.

Congo quickly replied with a strong attack in the dying embers but Mignon Koto missed the chance to restore their lead, ending the entire proceedings at 1-1.

Congo’s quest for three points were dashed as they sit bottom of Group E on one point with Tanzania staying in second with 10 points from six matches. Morocco, who lead the table with 15 points, will battle Niger who sit in 4th with six points later in the evening.

  2. Tanzania- 10 points (6 matches)
