World Cup Qualifiers: Cameroon bank on ‘Andre Onana’s reassuring presence’

Goalkeeper Andre Onana might be on the receiving end of criticisms at Manchester United over his unstable performances between the sticks.

The former Inter Milan shot-stopper has featured in one competitive game this Premier League season.

In that single appearance, Onana came under scrutiny as Reuben Amorim’s side lost 12-11 on post-match penalties to lower league side Grimsby Town days ago. The game had ended two-all in regulation time.

Onana was eventually relegated back to the bench in last weekend’s Premier League game against Burnley FC. United won 3-2.

Despite such criticism in England, the former Ajax Amsterdam FC man remains the trusted pair of hands back home.

Little wonder, the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has highlighted the importance of Onana in Thursday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Eswatini.

Analysing the game scheduled for Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium, the federation says “Onana’s presence reassures the rearguard, while Christopher Wooh and Jean-Charles Castelleto bring aerial density.”

FECOFA further adds that coach Marc Brys has riches of talent at his disposal, hence beating Eswatini was not optional.

“Cameroon will need to set the pace from the start. First, midfield control is key, with Zambo Anguissa as the metronome,” reads the analysis.

FECOFA also says the Indomitable Lions need the scoring ability of United new signing Bryan Mbeumo to unlock Eswatini’s defence.

“Then, Bryan Mbeumo’s verticality and Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu’s impact can stretch the opposing block. Vincent Aboubakar embodies experience and clarity in the decisive areas when it comes to finishing,” it reads.

Brys has recalled Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who plays club football for New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer, from a year-long absence.

The Belgian has since said he is happy with the condition of his players, saying: “Many of the players are in top form, and most are well-versed in international competitions.”

Cameroon’s next match in the World Cup qualifiers is against tricky Cape Verde on September 9 in Praia.
