World Cup Qualifying: Pasuwa admits Malawi looked down upon

Malawi coach Kalisto Pasuwa has urged his side to return to winning ways in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers to restore confidence as some quarters are ‘looking down upon’ the Flames.

The Zimbabwean made the call as the Flames resumed their chase for the diminishing prospects of a maiden World Cup qualifying place against Namibia in Botswana on Friday. The Flames’ next game is at home against Liberia.

Ahead of the Group H match at the Obert Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown, Pasuwa expressed confidence in his team’s readiness for the game.

“We know we can’t be playing games and losing games. People have looked down upon us, which is why we need to do well. Once we start getting results, even the new players coming in will gain confidence in the solid team being built,” the coach told Football Association of Malawi media.

Pasuwa then shared insights into how new players such as United States-based striker Mayele Malango are finding their feet in the Flames squad.

“Besides a few cases like Mayele and some other names being mentioned, as of now we will only confirm at the last minute if there are changes. But overall, the boys are ready to go,” he said.

Malawi will be without suspended midfielder Llyod Aaron and Blessings Singini is set to take up his place. The Flames lost 1-0 to Namibia at home and will be out for revenge.

The Flames are in fifth position with six points from six games and will be looking to improve their standing with a positive result against the Brave Warriors.
