World Cup (Q): Senegal complete stunning comeback in Kinshasa

Group B is now in the hands of Senegal following Tuesday’s sensational 3-2 comeback victory over DR Congo in Kinshasa from 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying. Substitute Pape Matar Sarr’s late match winner completed an inspired effort from Senegal who appeared to be dead and buried after a disastrous start.

Home support was at its loudest for the Leopards, who got off to a dream start with goals from Cédric Bakambu and Yoane Wissa giving the hosts a two-goal lead through 33 minutes.

However, Pape Gueye pulled a goal back before halftime before Nicolas Jackson leveled to set the stage for a dramatic winner from Matar Sarr.

The final two rounds in October will reveal the group winner but the odds favor the Senegalese, who now lead the group by two points. DRC travel to face Togo before ending their Group B fixtures at home against Sudan. Senegal’s schedule is much more favorable with a match away from home at bottom side South Sudan before closing up at home against another eliminated team, Mauritania.

In another match played siumlataneously, Sudan completed a disastrous week and are all but out of the race to qualify after falling 0-1 at Togo. Sadik Fofana’s 6th minute goal gave already eliminated Togo the full three points in Lomé.
