World Cup (Q): Ssemugabi header keeps Uganda’s dream alive

Uganda edged past hosts Botswana 1-0 in Thursday’s 2026 World Cup qualifying Group G encounter in Francistown. With the Zebras out of qualification, the Cranes are still in contention to qualify for the playoffs as one of the best second-placed teams.

It was an evenly matched first half, with scoring chances limited at both ends. Botswana’s best chance of the half came in the 23rd minute through Tumisang Orebonye, but he skied his shot well over the bar. Right before the interval, Rogers Mato did well to beat his marker and unleash a strong strike that was well saved by Zebras’ custodian Keeagile Kgosipula.

The Cranes piled on the pressure after the recess and were rewarded with a crucial goal in the 54th minute. An unmarked Jude Ssemugabi headed home from a corner by Allan Okello as the visitors took the lead.

The home side did attempt to restore parity, but creating chances was their main shortcoming. Mosha Gaolaolwe came the closest with a header after dreadful timing by legendary Cranes keeper Denis Onyango. Travis Mutyaba could have made it two for Uganda with a strike from close range, but Thabo Leinanyane cleared the ball off the line.

Botswana are winless in eight games against Uganda in competitive matches. Uganda now hopes to secure a playoff spot as they sit second with 18 points. Their next opponent will be table-toppers Algeria on Monday.
