Rulani Mokwena has reiterated his desire to leave Wydad Athletic Club at the end of the season, stating that the Moroccan side deserves better leadership.

The South African was speaking after Wydad Athletic Club's 1-1 away draw against OC Safi on Wednesday evening a result that keeps them third in Morocco’s Botola Pro League standings.

"It is up to the president. I already said that at the end [of the season] I will leave [...] I thank the president, he is the best president in Morocco, maybe in Africa," said Mokwena.

His side trails league leaders RSB Berkane by 15 points a gap the young coach admitted is simply not good enough.

"Wydad is a big club, and they deserve to win, and maybe they deserve a better coach than me. I love Wydad. I will only coach Wydad in Morocco,” he said.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach told journalists that while third place isn’t good enough, it still marks an improvement on last season’s sixth-place finish.

“[The fans] have every right to be emotional. They love their club, and you can feel it. In other places, for a big club to be number three is a good season, but for Wydad to be number three is not a good season, but the club will rise again,” assessed Mokwena.

Mokwena has frequently voiced his frustration over a lack of patience, especially given the number of new players still adapting to the team. The 38-year-old joined the Moroccan giants last year after parting ways with Mamelodi Sundowns.
