Tanzania’s Young Africans Sports Club (Yanga SC) have honoured their former Malawian coach and Kaizer Chiefs legend Jack Chamangwana posthumously.
The Dar es Salaam-based team held a ceremony to honour the ex-Kaizer Chiefs coach in Lilongwe on Friday. Yanga are in the Malawi capital for a CAF Champions League second round preliminary round match against Silver Strikers on Saturday.
The former Malawi captain joined the Soweto giants in 1985 and established himself as a reliable centre-back. He eventually served as an interim coach for AmaKhosi leading them to the league title in 1989. He returned to Malawi to manage childhood club Mighty Wanderers in the mid-1990s.
Chamangwana eventually landed the Yanga job around 2003 and won hearts in Dar es Salaam after steering the club to several silverware.
Speaking during the ceremony, Yanga president Eng. Hersi Said explained that they value the contributions that the former Chiefs legend made to the Tanzanian side.
“It is an honour to be part of the team. It is a special day for us to be in Malawi. We said it is important to be in Malawi. We said we should show our appreciation to the public for the work that your husband did. He won us two trophies in 2004 and 2005. He was one of the best coaches that we had,” Said said.
“We are here to appreciate the work of your husband. We have two gifts for you—one we will give you publicly, which is a certificate of recognition and the other thing a financial gift. I will give you on the side.”
The late Chamangwana’s wife Elizabeth said she felt honoured to receive the recognition on behalf of her late husband.
“I just want to thank you so much for remembering Yanga. He never forgot Yanga. He always talked about Yanga and how happy he was to coach Yanga. We are very grateful. Thank you very much for remembering him. God bless you. Continue to impress Jack wherever he is,” she said.
Chamangwana, ranked as probably Malawi’s best ever defender, died of diabetes in May 2018.
