Young Africans sack coach Romain Folz

Frenchman Romain Folz has been sacked as Young Africans Sports Club (Yanga SC) coach barely three months into the job. The Tanzania Mainland Premier League giants have confirmed the development on their social media platforms.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach has been shown the exit door hours after Yanga lost a CAF Champions League second preliminary round match 1-0 to Silver Strikers in Malawi on Saturday.

A statement from the Tanzanian side says newly-appointed assistant coach Patrick Mabedi will hold fort while the hunt for a new coach begins in earnest.

“Yanga SC management would like to inform the public that it has terminated the contract of first team coach, Romain Folz,” the statement reads.

Who will hold the fort at Young Africans after Romain Folz’s departure?

“During this period, our team will be under assistant coach Patrick Mabedi while the process of finding a head coach continues.”

The 35-year-old Frenchman was also fired in South Africa’s Betway Premiership in January this year, months after returning to the country where he previously had unsuccessful stints with Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu FC.

The loss to the Malawi champions proved to be last straw for the coach, who leaves Yanga in sixth place of the domestic league after posting one win and a draw from two matches.

Attacker Andrew Joseph’s late strike saw the Malawi champions Strikers stunning their Tanzanian counterparts in the Champions League second preliminary round match at Bingu National Stadium.

Yanga will host Strikers in the second leg next Saturday in Dar es Salaam.
