Mbodji scored twice for the Czech side on his Champions League debut, making it a night to cherish and remember.
Mbodji joined Slavia as a direct replacement for fellow Senegalese El Hadji Malick Diouf during the summer transfer window. He told L’Observateur that his hard work in training paid off during the tie:
“I think my performances in training were a factor. Since my arrival, I have tried to stay focused and consistent. Before signing here, I played in the second division, where I showed some good things. I had other offers, but I chose Slavia Prague because it’s a big club, marked by the passage of Senegalese players like Abdallah Sima and El Hadji Malick Diouf. I knew expectations would be high, and fortunately, I was able to start that way,” said Mbodji.
The 21-year-old defender conceded a penalty in the second half, but overall, he had a five-star performance on his Champions League debut. His immediate aim is now to play for Senegal. “I dedicate it to the Senegalese people. I felt all the support after that match, and it motivates me even more to work. My goal remains clear: to join the national team.”
Mbodji had stints in his native country and France before signing for Slavia Prague from Czech second tier side Jihlava. Slavia’s continental campaign will continue on September 30 when they face Italian giants Inter Milan at the San Siro.
