Former Zamalek player joins CS Sfaxien on a two-year deal

Tunisian side CS Sfaxien have announced the signing of former Zamalek defender Hamza Mathlouthi on a free transfer during the summer window. The 33-year-old returns to his boyhood club on a two-year contract, five seasons after leaving Sfaxien for Egyptian giants Zamalek.

Mathlouthi departed Zamalek this summer at the end of his contract, bringing to a close a four-year spell in Cairo. His final season was marred by a serious setback after suffering an ACL injury, which kept him sidelined for much of the campaign.

The full-back had initially joined Zamalek in 2020 from CS Sfaxien on a free transfer.

Hamza Mathlouthi trophies with Zamalek:

Over his time with Zamalek, Hamza Mathlouthi lifted six trophies — two Egyptian Premier League titles, two Egypt Cups, the CAF Confederation Cup, and the CAF Super Cup.

Before his move to Egypt, Mathlouthi was a key figure at Sfaxien, making 153 appearances, scoring five goals, and providing six assists. His return is expected to add experience to the Tunisian club’s defense.

The move also draws parallels with another Tunisian star, Ali Maaloul, who made the same switch from the opposite side. The Tunisisan legend joined CS Sfaxien on a free transfer earlier this summer on a free transfer form Al Ahly, where he established himself as one of the greatest foreign players in the Cairo club’s history.
