Wadi Degla pulled off a historic upset, defeating Zamalek 2-1 in their Nile Egyptian League Round 5 encounter – the club’s first-ever win over the Cairo giants.

Zamalek took the lead early in the 10th minute when Nasser Maher capitalized on a mistake from Wadi Degla’s Kamal Abou El Fotouh, racing through on goal before slotting past the keeper.

Wadi Degla responded strongly in the second half. In the 60th minute, Ahmed Farouk fired home a powerful strike inside the box to level the score.

Just seven minutes later, Zamalek defender Ahmed Fatouh gifted possession with a misplaced pass, leading to a dangerous Degla counterattack. After Mohamed Sobhy parried the initial shot, Mahmoud Diasty pounced on the rebound to put his side ahead 2-1.

The match grew more intense with two red cards: Mahmoud Hamdy “El Wensh” was sent off in the 72nd minute for an off-the-ball foul, while Wadi Degla’s Ibrahim Bahnasy was dismissed later for a reckless challenge on Fatouh.

Wadi Degla held firm until the end to secure a famous win – their first in 23 meetings against Zamalek, after previously recording 10 draws and 11 defeats.

The result leaves Zamalek second in the table on 10 points, missing the chance to extend their advantage over rivals Al Ahly, who lost to Pyramids. Wadi Degla climb to 10th place with 7 points.
