Violence mars Zambia league match, multiple people injured

A top-flight league match in Zambia between defending champions Power Dynamos and current leaders Red Arrows degenerated into violence on Thursday leaving scores injured at Nkoloma Stadium.

Eyewitnesses say hell broke loose in the late stages of the game when a fan invaded the pitch to confront a referee, prompting security stewards to whisk him away in the progress triggering a stone and object-throwing orgy on to the pitch.

The game ended goalless

Pan-Africa Football has seen pictures of injured fans seated and lying down on the pitch at the stadium while being treated by medics after the violence, which Zambia Premier League (ZPL) has condemned.

In a statement, ZPL chief executive officer Joseph Chimpampwe described the incident as regrettable, saying violence has no place in football.

Zambia Premier League CEO reacts to the incident

“The League has since instituted a full investigation into the matter in collaboration with relevant authorities and match officials. Those found responsible will face disciplinary action in accordance with the League Rules and Regulations,” reads part of the statement.

The league governing body has since instituted investigations on the matter while warning the perpetrators of a punishment.

“What happened at Nkoloma Stadium is extremely disappointing and unacceptable. As the Zambian Premier League, we are committed to ensuring that our stadia remain safe spaces for players, officials and supporters.

“We will not tolerate any acts of violence, and firm action will be taken against those found wanting. We urge fans to support their teams passionately but responsibly.”

Perpetrators risk sanctions including being fined and banned from watching such live domestic matches at the venue.
