Zambia legend Chamanga lands coaching gig

Former Zambia’s senior national football team striker James Chamanga has picked a coaching job back home.

The former SuperSport United player recently called it time on his playing career aged 45.

The towering man had continued to play for childhood club Red Lions even leading them to the 2024 Super League title.

However, the immediate past season did not pay much dividends for Arrows who settled for a fourth-place finish, 12 points behind eventual champions Power Dynamos FC. Little wonder, Chamanga announced his retirement from the game that had taken him to South Africa and China.

Now, Arrows have confirmed that they have given the ex-Moroka Swallows star a coaching role. As a man who made a name through scoring, Chamanga has been given the licence to groom the next generation of Zambian strikers.

Arrows have appointed their former captain as strikers’ coach ahead of the 2025-2026 season.

“Chamanga’s exceptional leadership, passion and professionalism are poised to play a pivotal role in nurturing talented strikers who will excel for both the club and country,” the club’s statement reads.

Chamanga was part of the Chipolopolo squad that defied all odds to win the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations title for the first time in the nation’s football history. He has spent six seasons with Red Arrows after joining from Chinese side Liaoning Hongyun FC.

He won two league titles with the Zambia Air Force-owned team. Chamanga launched his professional football career in 2000 at Makumbi Stars, and then signed for City of Lusaka two years later, followed by a loan spell at ZANACO.

The towering centre-forward attracted the attention of Bush Bucks FC before signing for the now defunct South African side in 2006.

The Chipolopolo veteran also had stints with Moroka Swallows FC until 2008, when he moved to the Chinese team.
