Zambia midfielder Miguel Chaiwa completes move to Hibs

Rising Zambia midfielder Miguel Chaiwa will have an opportunity for regular playing time after completing a permanent transfer from Swiss giants Young Boys to Scottish Premiership side Hibernian on Friday.

The 21-year-old joins for an undisclosed fee on a three-year contract with Hibs having the option to extend the deal for a further season. Chaiwa joins after making 34 appearances in all competitions over three seasons with Young Boys. He also spent four months on loan with Swiss second tier side Schaffhausen during the second half of the 2023-24 season where he made 14 appearances.

“Summer signing number six” proclaimed Hibernian’s social media accounts, emphasizing Chaiwa’s role as a midfielder. The deep-lying player is expected to fortify the Hibs midfield ahead of a highly anticipated season for the Edinburgh club.

Hibs finished third last season in the Scottish Premiership, establishing themselves as the top team outside the dominant Glasgow duo of Celtic and Rangers FC. They are competing in the qualification stages of the UEFA Conference League, where they stunned Serbian giants Partizan with a 2-0 first leg victory in Belgrade with the second leg set to take place in Edinburgh on August 14.

The transfer marks an attempt for Chaiwa to take the next step in his career after failing to make a decisive breakthrough into the Young Boys first team. Regular playing time at the club level will benefit Chaiwa’s prospects with the Zambia national team, where he has established himself as a regular sight as Chipolopolo prepare for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations at the end of the year in Morocco.

Hibs, who won the opening match of their Scottish Premiership season last weekend, next face Kilmarnock at home on August 10 before hosting Partizan on Thursday.
