The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) have raised fears that their December 21 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) first leg encounter against Mozambique in Maputo may not take place.

At least 20 people were injured in clashes with police in Mozambique on Saturday as violent protests against the disputed presidential election of October 9 continued, with two state buildings in the capital Maputo set on fire by arsonists, a senior police official said.

With Chipolopolo set to face the Mambas in Maputo, FAZ President Andrew Kamanga has revealed they are keenly monitoring the situation. "We are keeping our fingers crossed on the situation in Mozambique that has put our fixture against them in jeopardy given the post-election crisis," Kamanga explained in a statement seen by Pan-Africa Football.

"However, we will not drop the ball in terms of preparation as we want to be ready for that assignment. Our preparations are progressing normally for the December 21 away tie and December 28 home match in Ndola."

Zambia will host Mozambique in Ndola on December 28 at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in a reverse fixture with the winner over two legs qualifying to the CHAN which will be hosted in Kenya/Tanzania/Uganda in February next year.

Last week, coach Wedson Nyirenda named a squad of 28 players to start preparations for the two-legged fixture. Nyirenda welcomed players from Zesco United who were unavailable for the first camp.

Nyirenda is being assisted by Beston Chambeshi, Moses Sichone and Stephen Mwansa. Chintu Kampamba has been roped in as physical trainer while the team physician is Dr George Magwende.

In the final camp preceding the first leg encounter, Nyirenda is expected to trim his squad further but has indicated that the door is still open for top performers in the league to make the final cut.
