Zambia: FAZ and MTN Reaffirm Commitment to Football Sponsorship

Officials from the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) recently held discussions with telecommunications giant MTN regarding the continuation and possible expansion of their long-standing partnership supporting the development of football.

The meeting brought together FAZ president Keith Mweemba and representatives from the Zambian Premier League, who engaged MTN leadership in talks aimed at strengthening collaboration between the football governing body and the telecom company.

For many years, MTN has played an important role in supporting the sport through sponsorship of the country’s top-flight league and the national team, Chipolopolo. The company’s involvement has contributed significantly to the growth and visibility of domestic competitions.

FAZ Encouraged by Continued Support

Speaking during the discussions, FAZ president Keith Mweemba expressed satisfaction with the willingness shown by the telecommunications company to continue supporting football.

According to Mweemba, the relationship between the football federation and the corporate partner must continue to create benefits for both sides while also supporting the development of the sport.

“We are happy to be here and happy that the CEO says MTN is willing to go far with football. We need to create a win-win situation,” Mweemba said.

The FAZ president further emphasised that the federation is determined to move forward positively and focus on building stronger partnerships for the future rather than dwelling on past challenges.

“FAZ is a going concern and we will not dwell on the past as it should not be an excuse. I can assure you that we are ready to sit down and work together for the benefit of football,” he added.

Football’s Importance to Society

During the meeting, Mweemba also highlighted the unique role that football plays in society. As the world’s most popular sport, the game has the power to unite people from different backgrounds and communities.

Because of its widespread popularity, continued investment in football development remains important for both sporting and social reasons.

The FAZ leadership believes strong partnerships with corporate organisations will help improve the quality of competitions while also providing more opportunities for players, coaches and officials involved in the game.

MTN Keen to Extend Partnership

On the corporate side, MTN Chief Executive Officer Abbad Reda reaffirmed the company’s commitment to maintaining and strengthening its relationship with the football governing body.

Reda noted that the telecommunications company values its long-standing association with the sport and would like to see the partnership continue for many years.

“We have been with FAZ for several years and would want this partnership to continue and be broadened so that both parties walk away as winners,” Reda said.

The CEO suggested that expanding collaboration between the two organisations could create new opportunities to promote football while also supporting community engagement initiatives.

Long-Term Investment in Football

MTN has been involved in supporting football development since 2010, when the company first partnered with the federation to sponsor the national team and provide support to the FAZ secretariat.

Over the years, this collaboration has helped strengthen domestic competitions while also assisting the national team in its participation in international tournaments.

Corporate partnerships such as this remain essential in modern football, particularly in supporting infrastructure, youth development programmes and league organisation.

Future of the Partnership

The current agreement between the telecommunications company and the football governing body is scheduled to run until December 2026.

With discussions already taking place about expanding cooperation, both parties appear optimistic about the future of their relationship.

Continued collaboration between football authorities and corporate partners will play a key role in ensuring that the sport continues to grow and thrive in the years ahead.
