Zambia’s MTN Super League record champions Nkana FC have been docked three points, plunging them deeper into the relegation zone.
The club based in the copper mining town of Kitwe was found guilty of fielding an ineligible player, Nduna Zulu, during a recent game against Green Buffaloes FC.
A statement from the
Zambia Premier League confirmed to have meted out the punishment.
“The Zambian Premier League has fined Nkana K10,000, following their week three fixture against Green Buffaloes after the club was found guilty of fielding an ineligible player,” reads the statement.
“As part of the disciplinary ruling, their week three opponents Green Buffaloes have been awarded a 3-0 victory from the match played on August 30. Buffaloes lost 0-1 to the 13-time winners on April 30 at Nkana Stadium.
The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ)’s Player Status Committee has since emphasized that the fine should be paid within seven days.
Nkana, meanwhile, say they will appeal the decision before the FAZ Appeals Committee, hoping for a fair consideration.
“While we respect the process, we firmly believe that this outcome does not reflect the diligence and professionalism with which our club operates,” the club’s statement.
Nkana claim the issue occurred due to a system failure during Zulu’s registration process. The former league champions have since dropped to second place from the bottom.
Nkana’s misfortune has turned into Buffaloes’ blessing as they have jumped up into the second place on the
18-member log table.
