Former Zambia midfielder Rainford Kalaba has challenged the current Chipolopolo to emulate the 2015 feat by winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.
The TP Mazembe technical team member said this in an interview with the Football Association of Zambia YouTube Television to reflect on the Copper Bullets’ unthinkable post-match penalty win over Ivory Coast in the final in Gabon.
Kabala was a key player in Chipolopolo’s title-winning party which he described as a great moment that redefined Zambian football history.
“It was a great moment for all Zambians because winning the AFCON is not an easy thing. It brings memories and happiness. When we lifted the cup, it was emotional,” he said.
The former Zambian international, who is part of the under-17 team coaching panel, has since advised the current generation of players to fight for their country.
“This is an opportunity for our current team to fight for Mother Zambia and win the trophy. They must focus and know that it is a big stage for them to bring joy to Zambians and their football careers.
“It is an opportunity for them to go there again. They should know the advice and instructions from the coach because he knows how to win the tournament and how to win games,” he added.
Zambia fell gradually from grace after the 2012 AFCON exploits, even failing to qualify for the finals for eight consecutive years from 2015.
However, that trend changed in 2023 when ex-Chelsea boss Avram Grant took the team back to the continental competition and the Israeli has now made it back-to-back qualifications.
