Power Dynamos were crowned champions of the Zambian Super League after edging out Green Eagles 1-0 in decisive fixture at Arthur Davis Stadium in Kitwe on Saturday.
Brian Masanyinga scored the only goal from the penalty spot deep in stoppages to hand Dynamos an unassailable lead at the top of the table. During the battle, Green Eagles proved a hard nut to cruck taking the game into 0-0 with minutes left to the final whistle.
A draw could have forced Dynamos to wait until the final day of the season to be crowned, but after piling pressure on Green Eagles, they were awarded a penalty which Masanyinga converted to win the game and hand them their eighth league title in history.
With one game to play, Dynamos are top of the table with 67 points, seven ahead of second-placed ZESCO United, who played on Sunday and lost 1-0 in Kitwe to Mutondo Stars.
Godfrey Chibanga’s 26th minute header lifted Stars out of the relegation places.
But before the defeat, ZESCO had been assured of second place after Nkana FC’s 5-2 loss at FC MUZA in Mazabuka on Saturday. Andrew Phiri and Rickson Ngambi both got a double for MUZA with Given Kalusa scoring the other.
Lumwana Radiants’ stay in the topflight was ended after a 1-0 home loss to NAPSA Stars on Saturday while Forest Rangers were also relegated to the second division.
