ZESCO United beat previous holders Red Arrows 4-2 on post-match penalties to lift their seventh ABSA Cup on Saturday. The two teams had shared the spoils at one-all in regulation time at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.
The final in Ndola attracted a huge crowd, including President Hakainde Hichilema and newly-elected Football Association of Zambia president Keith Mweemba.
When play started, it was clear that this would be a tight affair. Zesco United dominated proceedings in the first half and were rewarded when Abraham Siankombo scored in the 28th minute.
Siankombo’s strike was enough to send ZESCO into the lead by halftime.
However, the airmen did not go down without a fight as they equalized through Joseph Phiri’s strike in the 53rd minute. That proved to be the only goal in open play. Eventually, the game ended goalless in 90 minutes, paving the way for extra time that still yielded nothing. It took post-match penalties to separate the two teams.
