A teenage footballer died in Zambia after collapsing while celebrating a goal during a top-flight women’s league game on Saturday.
In a statement, the Zambian Premier League (ZPL) Chief Executive Officer Joseph Chimpampwe confirmed the death of Annita Chomba in Kabwe town.
The 15-year-old collapsed after rushing from the bench onto the pitch to celebrate a goal for her team, Green Buffaloes women’s team, during a game against Locus Women FC.
“The ZPL extends its deepest condolences to the Chomba family, her teammates, the technical staff, and the entire football fraternity during this painful and difficult time. The loss of such a young and promising life is heartbreaking and has left the football community in shock,” reads ZPL statement.
“The League is engaging relevant authorities and stakeholders to establish the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.”
The goalkeeper had joined Green Buffaloes on loan from Locus Women FC at the time of her passing. She was on the substitutes’ bench during the game.
Chomba was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention before being pronounced dead .
