Zimbabwe’s Caps United unveil youth team coach Kamwendo

Zimbabwe’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) side Caps United have finally unveiled Malawian Joseph Kamwendo as their new head of reserve teams.

The former Orlando Pirates midfielder has returned to the Harare-based team some 20 years after he played for them.

Speaking after his unveiling, Kamwendo explained why Makepekepe have a special place in his career.

What ex-Pirates star Kamwendo said during his unveiling

“It is because of the relationship that is between me and the club in general that I thought it wise to come back and serve the club once more even though in a different role. I am very honoured and thank the club’s president and madam. It is a good feeling to be here,” he told the team’s media.

“I have to thank the Caps’ United family for showing me to the world. Everyone knows that I went to Europe through Caps United so I have so much respect for them.”

The former Mighty Wanderers star then vowed to plough back to the Castle Lager PSL team.

“I have gained meeting different coaches, playing in different environments and different clubs. I will use the same experience to help the club to move forward.

“I will use the same experience to build so many stars. If we can all work together and try to push forward, I see a great future ahead of us,” he added.

How Caps United thrush Kamwendo onto football big stage

Kamwendo was a star at Caps in his heydays. He thrilled crowds with his fancy footwork, and made history by becoming the first foreigner to win the Soccer Star of the Year gong in 2025-2006.

Such a recognition paved the way for his big-money transfers to top clubs such as Nordsjaelland in Denmark, TP Mazembe and Pirates.

Kamwendo will also be sitting on the team’s coaching panel led by head coach Ian Bakala. The Malawian’s last job was with Mchinji Villa FC, a second tier league side he joined months ago after parting ways with TNM Super League outfit Creck Sporting Club.
