Zimbabwe top-league side CAPS United president Farai Jere has explained the choice of Malawi and Mozambique for pre-season friendlies next month.
Speaking to Herald newspaper in Harare, the boss for the team, affectionately called Makepekepe, confirmed that the pre-season games in Lilongwe begins on February 12.
The last leg of the tour will involve a stopover in Tete, Mozambique, for a final warm- up.
“After four weeks of [fitness and] conditioning, they are now fit to play games; hence, we have lined up a tournament. We will play against the champions and other teams in Lilongwe,” he said.
Jere stressed that CAPS United will take the friendlies seriously to build a strong team that can compete for silverware next season.
“We are not going to be excited with [street] lights. We will go there for serious business,” he said.
“We will be there for one week-and-a-half. On our way back, we will play the Mozambique champions [UD Songo]. It is already aligned and confirmed. When we come back, that is when we have the unveiling of a new kit ready for the season.”
For CAPS United’s Malawian second assistant coach Joseph Kamwendo, striker Chawanangwa Kaonga and midfielder Llyod Njaliwa, the pre-season in Lilongwe will offer them a free ride back home.
