CAPS United of Zimbabwe have explained the roles of Orlando Pirates legend Joseph Kamwendo and his Kaizer Chiefs opposite number Tinashe Nengomasha in the team’s coaching panel.
The Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) outfit, desperate to return to its glory days, has roped in the former Buccaneers and AmaKhosi midfielders to assist newly-appointed coach Takesure Chiragwi.
The Harare-based team has drafted in the Malawian as the second assistant with the former Zimbabwe captain hired as a team manager. Zambian Ian Bakala, who led the team last season after management failed to secure Chiragwi from his previous team Ngezi Platinum FC, is now the first assistant coach.
In a statement, CAPS United management says they settled for Kamwendo and Nengomasha owing to their strong international football experience.
“His experience, combined with Bakala and Kamwendo’s knowledge of the club, will enable the team to tap into a deep well of expertise,” reads the statement.
“Tinashe Nengomasha, a former professional midfielder, brings a wealth of experience to CAPS United FC as the team’s new manager. He also had a successful transition from a playing role to a management position, his expertise as a seasoned midfielder can still positively impact the team’s dynamics.
“Nengomasha’s leadership skills, honed during his playing days in SA at Kaizer Chiefs and further developed through his management course with FIFA, will be invaluable in guiding the Caps United midfield department.”
Kamwendo, whose substantive post is head of youth development, will be coaching compatriots—midfielder Llyod Njaliwa and striker Chawanangwa Kaonga. Midfielder Njaliwa has joined the Harare-based team from Costa do Sol of Mozambique with Chawanangwa transferring from ZANACO FC in Zambia.
Under the former Lusaka Dynamos coach Bakala last season, CAPS United finished in ninth place on the 18-member log table, a distant 26 points away from champions Scottland FC.
The former Chipolopolo star inherited the team when it had collected just eight points from 10 games, while positioned fourth from the foot of the 18-member log table.
