Zimbabwe kicked off their Group B campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Eswatini at the 2025 COSAFA Women’s Championship in South Africa on Thursday.
The regional premier women’s tournament roared into life on Wednesday with Group A action at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. On Thursday, the spotlight shifted to the second pool, which features the Mighty Warriors, Eswatini, and a later afternoon clash between Botswana and defending champions Zambia.
Zim found the net in either half through Prayne Zvawanda and Rutendo Makore, sending the Mighty Warriors to the top of the table pending the result of the day’s second fixture.
Zvawanda broke the deadlock for the Zimbabweans seven minutes before the interval, connecting with a fine header to finally breach the Eswatini defence. The Mighty Warriors maintained their 1-0 lead heading into the break.

While Eswatini were expected to mount a spirited comeback in the second half, they struggled to find their rhythm. Instead, Zimbabwe doubled their advantage in the 55th minute. Substitute Rutendo Makore received a crisp pass from the right wing, expertly controlled the ball to lose her marker, and slotted an angled low drive into the bottom corner.
Makore nearly turned provider shortly after, but her strike partner failed to convert a clear-cut chance from her inviting cross into the box. Despite the missed opportunity, Zimbabwe remained in control, limiting Eswatini to a few speculative, long-range efforts.
Group B action resumes on Tuesday, February 24, when Zimbabwe take on Botswana at the Seshego Stadium. Meanwhile, Eswatini will look to bounce back when they face the formidable Copper Queens of Zambia at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
