AFC Leopards squander chance to dislodge Gor Mahia

Kenyan Premier League outfit AFC Leopards missed out on a great opportunity to move above their rivals Gor Mahia at the summit of the FKF Premier League after suffering a humiliating 3-0 defeat against champions Kenya Police FC at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.

AFC Leopards went into the game knowing a win of any kind will propel them past the record Kenyan champions at the top. A win could have seen Ingwe move one point ahead of Gor Mahia.

Yves Koutiama put Police FC ahead

Under bright, sunny skies in the capital, it was Police FC, who seized control almost immediately. In the sixth minute, Yves Junior Koutiama struck with precision to hand Police an early lead, sending their supporters into a frenzy.

Buoyed by the opener, Police FC maintained relentless pressure. Their efforts paid off again in the 31st minute when Erick Zakayo calmly finished off a superbly crafted assist from Daniel Sakari, doubling the advantage and firmly putting AFC Leopards on the back foot.

As the first half drew to a close, Police FC delivered yet another blow. In the 45th minute, Charles Ouma found the back of the net to make it 3-0, capping off a dominant first-half display that left AFC Leopards struggling for answers.

The second half saw tactical adjustments from Police FC, with a triple substitution in the 71st minute introducing Brian Chonjo, Clinton Kinanga and Awesu Ali in place of Alvin Mang’eni, Yves Koutiama and Erick Zakayo.

Later, in the 82nd minute, Edward Omondi came on for Marvin Nabwire as Police sought to extend their lead.

Despite continued pressure, no further goals were added. The referee signalled four minutes of added time, and at 90+4, brought the contest to an end with Police FC sealing a convincing 3-0 victory over AFC Leopards.

At Gusii Stadium, Shabana FC secured a 1-0 win against Kakamage Homeboyz to jump to fifth on the log. The Kisii-based Glamour Boys have now amassed 46 points from 28 matches.
