World Cup: “Carlos Queiroz has experience to withstand pressure” – Badu

Former Ghana midfielder, Emmanuel Agyemang Badu says new coach, Carlos Queiroz has the experience to contain any ensuing pressure at the World Cup.

The veteran Portuguese tactician signed a four-months contract to lead the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada and USA.

He replaced Otto Addo whose service was dispensed with after an underwhelming performance in Ghana’s two international friendlies against Austria [5-1] and Germany [2-1] in March.

The 73-year-old has managed seven different countries, leading South Africa (2002), Portugal (2010) and Iran (2014, 2018, and 2022) to the FIFA World Cup.

His best performance in those outings has been a round 16 finish with Portugal at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

With Ghana’s best performance being a quarter final place finish at the 2010 World Cup, Queiroz might face mounting pressure to equal or surpass that feat.

Agyemang Badu however believes the former Oman manager has the wherewithal to manage affairs.

“You can be a good coach but fail with the materials you have and you can be a bad coach and succeed with the materials you have,” Agyamang Badu told Radio Gold.

“So as experienced as he is, needs to manage to bring the best out of the guys because if somebody tells me that our team lacks quality I don’t buy it.

“Maybe some don’t have experience which I will agree but you need an experienced coach that can manage to bring the best out of the players.

“So such experienced coaches know how to manage situations so it doesn’t matter the kind of country he has coached, the kind of quality he has coached.

“The experience ane how they speak to people and manage people and read games is a plus for these coaches and I know we will get the best out of him as well.”

The Mozambique born tactician previously coached Qatar, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Colombia and Egypt, guiding the Pharaohs to the finals of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations where they lost to Senegal in the final in Cameroon.

At club level, he has managed Portugal side, Sporting CP, the New York/New Jersey Metrostars in Major League Soccer and Spanish club Real Madrid.

He also had two spells as Alex Ferguson’s assistant manager at English club Manchester United.
