Superliga: Chilufya scores first of the season to help Midtjylland seize top spot

It has been a difficult 2025-26 season for Edward Chilufya but the Zambian scored in his first start of 2026 for FC Midtjylland as the club secured an important 2-1 victory at Sønderjyske in the Danish Superliga.

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations veteran has struggled with injuries throughout the season but he was in a perfect position to finish from the rebound for the opening goal after Dario Osorio’s shot attempt was spilled into Chilufya’s path. It was the Chipolopolo forward’s first goal in all competitions this season.

Former American international Matthew Hoppe provided a response for hosts Sønderjyske shortly before halftime. However, an own goal early in the second half was enough for FCM to secure a massive three points.

Massive result in the Superliga title race

Earlier in the day, incumbent leaders AGF Aarhus conceded a late equalizer to drop points in a 1-1 draw at FC Nordsjælland. FCM are now tied with Aarhus on 57 points but have a superior goal difference with only four rounds remaining. The two teams will meet in a potential title-deciding clash on Sunday, with Aarhus hosting the crucial duel.

FCM coach Mike Tullberg has some difficult decisions to make. With league top scorer and Guinea-Bissau national team star Franculino Djú available, it is likely that Chilufya will return to his usual role as a substitute for Sunday’s match. Franculino remained on the bench Thursday in the midst of a busy stretch of matches.

But as any coach will say in such a situation, it is a “good problem” to have. Last season, FCM came up agonizingly short with one point separating them from champions FC Copenhagen. Once again, it is coming down to the final matches and the 2023-24 winners will hope to emerge at the top.
